2017 Dodge Models: Still Setting the Standard for American-Made Muscle Cars & Performance Sports Cars

The 2017 Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger and Dodge Viper are potent cars that evoke the automaker's muscle car heritage dating back to the late 1960s. Going back nearly 50 years, the original versions of the Dodge Charger, the Coronet B/T and, ultimately, the Challenger sports coupe and convertible, established Dodge's credentials among teenagers and driving enthusiasts alike. These legendary models, not unlike today's models, offered everything from basic, economical engines to highly-tuned performance version of the classic HEMI V8.

The Dodge Challenger

Today, the 2017 Dodge Challenger is Dodge's modern-day muscle car. It's available with a wide range to trim levels and engine options. It's a five-seat, door-door coupe that with body styling that and a grille design that's made to intimidate. Five available trim levels include the SXT, R/T, R/T Scat Pack, SRT 292 and SRT Hellcat. Even the base SXT is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 that makes 305 horsepower and 268 pound-feet of torque. And it's loaded with plenty of standard features, including 18-inch wheels, heated mirrors, dual-zone climate control and power driver seat, along with Bluetooth, a 5.0-inch touchscreen and a six-speaker audio system.

From there, you can move up from rungs - the R/T Scat Pack has a 6.4-liter V8 that makes 485 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque. Still not enough? Maybe the SRT Hellcat will satisfy your need for raw speed - it has a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that produces...wait for it...707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque.

The Dodge Charger

The 2017 Dodge Charger, like its Challenger sibling, exudes power and performance on one hand and but also offers the practicality of...well, four doors. This is a performance sedan, not a car for family touring. It comes in cool, attention-grabbing colors and is also well outfitted with a range of features and options which, along with its engine options, makes it highly customizable. The Charger's trim packages include the SE, SXT, R/T, Daytona, R/T Scat Pack, Daytona 392, SRT 392 and the SRT Hellcat. All are standard with rear-wheel drive, but the SE and SXT are also available with all-wheel drive.

The Charger SE and SXT features a 3.6-liter V6 engine that makes 292 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Next up are the R/T and Daytona, with a 5.7-liter V8 that produces 370 horsepower and 395 pound-feet of torque. The R/T Scat Pack and the 392 packages take things up another notch - a 6.4-liter V8 cranks out 485 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque. Finally, the Hellcat. Like in the Challenger, a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 makes a mind-blowing 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. Rumors are that it will shoot from 0-60 mph in right around 4.1 seconds.

The Dodge Viper

Make no mistake: the 2017 Dodge Viper is a beast, and best suited for thrill-seekers and driving aficionados who know their way around a racetrack. If you want ungodly power and performance in a futuristic sports car page, this is the car for you.

If you thought the Hellcat versions of the Challenger and Charger pushed the envelope in terms of power, consider the Viper. It's powered by a massive 8.4-liter V10 engine that pours out 645 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive is your only option. It can go from standing to 60 mpg in just about 3.6 seconds.

The Viper is available in four trim levels: SRT, GTC, GTS and track-focused ACR. The SRT is the Viper as its most basic and stripped down, while the GTC and GTS get you features like a racier hood, high-end Brembo brakes, a five-mode stability control system, driver-adjustable dampers and a six-way power driver seat. With the GTS you also get upgraded leather upholstery and an 18-speaker Harman Karon audio system.

The race track-oriented ACR cuts down on some interior niceties but makes up with it carbon-fiber aerodynamic elements, more aggressive tires, six-piston brake caliper, carbon-ceramic brake rotors, a stiffer suspension and 10 manually adjustable damper settings.
