The 2018 Jeep Compass earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick rating

The 2018 Jeep Compass is a compact SUV with stylish looks and a sophisticated flair. We could talk for days about the model's aesthetic appeal, but today we want to talk about the IIHS Top Safety Pick title the vehicle earned.

Here are the tests any vehicle that visits the IIHS center must undergo, and they are notoriously challenging.

  • Small overlap front for the driver and passenger side (see video below)
  • Moderate overlap front
  • Side
  • Roof strength
  • Head restraints & Seats

Scores are ranked using this key: Poor, Marginal, Acceptable, and Good. The Compass earned top 'Good' scores on the main tests!

The IIHS also has three other independent tests. The first is Front Crash Prevention and the Jeep Compass scored a Superior for trims that are equipped with forward collision warning and active braking.

Unfortunately, the Compass struggled with the remaining two tests. On the headlight portion it earned a Marginal rating for select trims. This interest in headlight strength is new for the IIHS and many other makers are struggling with it, much like the small overlap front test when it was introduced a few years ago. Knowing that, we're eager to see how the Compass's headlights can improve.

Another area the Compass faltered was in the LATCH child seat restraints. Testers thought they were hard to reach and the Compass earned a Poor. That said, while improvements are always appreciated, most shoppers with young children buy or lease a larger vehicle, like the Jeep Cherokee.

There are still a few areas where the Compass can improve (and that can be said for all vehicles), but were impressed with the top crash ratings it earned!
